Quality

Where each batch is measured, and what happens when a figure falls outside the customer specification.

Coils of drawn wire on reels inside a wire mill

Checkpoints

  1. Incoming coil

Every aluminium coil arrives with a chemical composition certificate from the supplier, and a sample from each coil is tested before it goes into production. A certificate is a claim; the sample is the check.

  2. Drawing

Diameter is gauged continuously while the wire is drawn, not sampled at the end. A wire that runs thin for twenty metres passes an end-of-batch check and fails on the customer's film.

  3. Degreasing

Drawing oils and residue are removed after drawing. What is left on the surface ends up in the vacuum chamber.

  4. Layer winding

Wire is wound layer to layer on the spool, jointless, so it pays off an automatic metalliser without an operator re-threading it mid-run.

  5. Batch tensile test

Tensile strength of every batch is tested in house on a tensile machine and recorded against the customer's specification. A batch outside it does not ship.

  6. Packing

Spools are packed in corrugated boxes to the customer's requirement and shipped by road or by sea.
